What is a life plan?

A life plan is a roadmap of how you want your ideal life to look.

Its main purpose is to give you more clarity, direction, and focus.

You can plan your life for six months, a year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, and even your entire lifespan, in advance.

Why is a life plan important?

Planning for the future can help you prioritize what is most important in your life so you can make decisions that will ultimately lead to greater personal happiness and fulfillment.

Whenever I was inconsistent with my life plans I always felt lost, overwhelmed, and stuck on autopilot.

This is why I want to share my top tips for success with your own life planning.

Tips on how to create your life planner:

Start with the end goal in mind.

When you’re planning your life, start with the results that you want to achieve first.

At the early stages of life planning, you don’t have to know how you’re going to get there, you just need to know what you want and desire.

Write down your biggest dreams.

I learned from Rachel Rodgers, the author of the book, “We should all be millionaires”, that when we are planning for our life, we should dream big.

While it’s fine to have dreams that are small and achievable, they don’t spark joy inside of us as a big audacious dream would.

So make sure you write down all of your biggest dreams when you are planning for your life and then you can plan and work out all the hows in your life planner worksheet.

Write down all of your values.

Your values are the things that are most important to you in life. My top three values right now are my family, health, and financial freedom. Here are some examples of values to give you some ideas:

Making a list of your top values will help you prioritize what is most important to you so you can focus on the things that matter most and save your precious energy and resources in the process.

You could start with a list of about 3 core values and then plan your life accordingly around them. You can always add more values and reassess your list later.

Create SMART goals.

This is the stage where you take all of your biggest goals, dreams, and values and create a plan.

Goals are the steps that you need to take in order to create the life that you truly want.

When creating your goals, make sure you follow the SMART method.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. SMART goals are the targets that you aim for when you’re planning your life goals.

Celebrate your wins.

Make sure you give yourself a pat on the back and celebrate your wins each time you reach a goal or milestone.

You can celebrate your wins by giving yourself a high-five, congratulating yourself, or telling yourself how awesome you are.

Celebrating your wins lights up the reward centers of your brain when you see all the progress you’ve been making and how far you’ve come in your life’s journey.

This is important because it instills a sense of inspiration, pride, and confidence. It acts as fuel to propel you forward so you can tackle your next goal and achieve your wildest dreams.

Rumor has it, President Eisenhower created this matrix to help him make important decisions.

  4. Don’t do

You can write down your most important and urgent tasks accordingly. List your most important tasks first from the “Do first” section.

Lastly, the tasks under “Don’t do” can be eliminated.

A few more tips for Life Planning.

Don’t get too attached to the outcome

When you’re planning for your life be sure not to stay too attached to the outcome. It’s normal to want your plans to come to fruition.

But this mindset only sets you up for disappointment. I would suggest being fluid with your life plans.

Lay out all of your big life dreams, work toward your goals, and then let go of control.

Embrace imperfection.

Another tip I want to share is to embrace imperfection when it comes to planning your life.

Perfection kills progress. I would know because I used to have this mindset and it kept me in constant fear of making mistakes, looking like a fool, and taking action.

Life planning can look linear on paper but remember that life itself is full of surprises and unexpected twists and turns.

Embracing imperfection while you’re working through your life plans can keep you from going down the rabbit hole of self-criticism, self-judgment, and staying stuck.

The Takeaway.

Having a life plan is important because it gives you more direction, focus, and clarity in life.

A life planning worksheet is a great way to keep track of all your big dreams and goals in life.

It is a simple tool to help you manage and organize your life so that you can focus on the things that matter most and ultimately live your life with more meaning and happiness.
